  2. His ten symphonies, the moving Das Lied von
  3. der Erde/Song of the Earth 1909, and his song
  4. cycles display a synthesis of Romanticism and
  5. new uses of chromatic harmonies and musical
  6. forms. Mahler was born in Bohemia (now
  7. Czechoslovakia); he studied at the Vienna
  8. Conservatoire, and conducted in Prague,
  9. Leipzig, Budapest, and Hamburg 1891-97. He
  10. was director of the Vienna Court Opera from
  11. 1897 and conducted the New York Philharmonic
  12. from 1910.
